Video installation - Where Are You?
Introduction
People like to watch people. The art work Where Are You? (WAY?)is about that. It shows daily life in the streets in cities all over the world. It provides us with a genuine impression of life in another place. You see people stand, talk and walk and live the life the way they do.
Concept
To get a good idea of how people live in a certain place in the world you have to stand still for a while and have a good look. After some time you see patterns, re-occurring actions and typical actions which are cultural and site-specific. The project WAY? has documented these actions I a series of 20 recordings worldwide. The recordings are one take recordings from approximately 20 to 60 minutes, unlike the images we see on television. The recordings don’t have the usual goal to attract as many viewers as possible, like on TV. The recordings are uncut and thus give a genuine overview of what happens in the streets. The maker has chosen to record average daily views. This means that touristic places are not part of the selection.
Eventually there will be a huge collection of recordings from all over the world. The aim is to exhibit these recordings in different parts of the world again, and thus connecting world citizens and giving them the opportunity to meet each other’s world.
Installation
The recordings are projected on big screens on a 1:1 scale. This enhances the real-life experience to the viewer. Once he sees the projection the viewer enters that world for a moment. There will be at least 2 projections at the same time in the installation. Best is to have 4 projections at the same time, depending of the venue of course. There’s no plot in the recordings. This enables viewers to come, see and walk on again. They may have a look for 3 minutes, or they can stay, maybe have a seat at a table at the (coffee)bar which will be centered in between the projections.
